Ahh actually any black animal was associated with evil and darkness. The pig in Judaism is an unclean animal that eats dirt (and so is considered unedible). The color black has long been associated with the devil since he is the "prince of darkness". For a time the color blue represented the devil, during the renaissance. Dogs were cosidered messengers of evil, along with ravens, crows, cats, bats and other animals especially owls since they were silent and nocturnal.

Religious fanatics use imagery to support their story that Lucifer is bad and god is good. Even though that is totally wrong. God killed millions in the bible, yet there isn't one death attributed to Lucifer... Hmmmm... So these religious freaks try to associate good things with god, like bringing fertile rain and subsequent rainbows. Then they take something scary like a snarling dog and attribute it to Satan. Like a scene out of Hollywood. Good guys wear the white hats and the bad guys wear black.
