Sin is anything that is outside God's perfect will for you. There is a myth out there that thinks that something is a sin because it "hurts God" somehow. No, that's not it.

Sin is sin because it hurts us. Look at the commandments. The first 4 have to do with our relationship to God. Why is that important? Because it keeps us focused on the fact that we are responsible to someone Who is superior to us. We owe to Him all of our love, honor and praise forever and ever.

How does it hurt us if we forget these commandments? Have you ever met someone who thought that they were more important that they really were? Well, you get the idea.

The next 6 are about our relationship to others. Don't lie.. don't kill... don't commit adultry and so on. The harm in these laws is, I think, obvious.

God hates sin because of the severe damage it does to us, His creation and the desired object of His love..

How sad so many people choose to continue to sin by not to responding to His love expressed through Jesus Christ..

If you seek a single passage, you're outta luck.

Sin is defined as those thoughts, words and deeds which do the following:

A) Cause harm to a person or creature and do so deliberately.

B) Cause the sinner's heart to harden to love.

C) Create a chasm between God and the sinner.

Any or all of the above will inevitably cause you to remove yourself from the love of God. Move far enough, stay away long enough and your soul's sustenance stops. You die to the good. You gradually become not just prone to do evil, but to BE evil yourself. Of your own will you distance yourself from God. You damn yourself. And that is NOT what God wants for you.

I AM THAT I AM. That should give you a clue. The HOLY NATURE of GOD-----IS GOD!!!!!!!!! HE IS. I AM. That 's because you can't seperate what HE does from WHO HE IS. So now your thinking, well look at this EARTH. A mess.!!!! I AM didn't do it. The Devil rebelled and Adam let him into this CREATION(EARTH and STAR SYSTEM). GOD won't (cause it's possible) CHANGE HIMSELF, but HE can change the way HE deals with FALLEN MANKIND. And HE did when HE did away with the Old Testament(contract with man to get to HEAVEN) and brought in the New Testament(contract with man to get to HEAVEN with BETTER PROMISE's). Even though we SIN all the time(anything that is not of FAITH is SIN), we don't really know that we are sinning(cept for the big one's, murder, rape etc.) and GOD overl-looks it even though were sinning. It's like being a PARENT, you don't whip a kid untill you have taught that KID what right and wrong is, then he rebells and does wrong and YOU know that HE knows, then even after that your whipping is lenient till the kid does it over and over!!!! Now ain't that right??????? GOD won't whip us hard till wev'e learned something, and then continue to do it wrong!!!! As you go up in the Spiritual REALM by LEARNING TRUTH, you should get FREE'R and FREE'R , unless your a Hard-Head(rebellious) and then you'll get whippered and whippered by God cause HE LOVE's you and wants you FREE.!!!!!! It's just like raising KID's ain't it???? YOU whip them so they'll learn and be Free and Safe from Dangerous things, you whip them cause you LOVE THEM and don't want them to be HURT in any-way. And if YOU WHIP them in the WRONG WAY, then YOU are WRONG!!!!!!(and need a whipping too!!!!).

Sin is a term in archery...to miss the mark. It is a human invention to apply it to the manmade religions. The bible is merely the writing of men, put together by the church authority for control issues.

The most common definition is "disobedience to God."

Which makes it vague and ambiguous given God's capricious and arbitrary manner of inventing rules which he then negates by some other act.

Additional comment:

The proof of my assertion that "sin" is vague & ambiguous can be found in the answers to your question. Odd how "sin" will send someone to "hell," but no one actually knows what "sin" really is.

Yes there is. The criteria is the Golden Rule. Anything that you do not like to be done to you by others becomes a sin if you do it to them.

Choosing to fall into Satan's temptations is the criteria for sin.
