I've worked with both Nikon and Canon , and all I can say is that Nikon is way better . From handling to image quality , lenses , all . Which figures : Nikon have their own lenses manufacturer , Nikkor , and have a solid background and experience in fabricating a wide range of lenses , from microscopes to telescopes , and since the lens is the most important part of the camera , well , what can I say ? Canon started fabricating their own lenses a short time ago , and I'm not quite convinced of their quality .
As for the best SLR make , that would be Jenica Minolta . Pro equipment and prizes to match . The bad thing is I heart they stopped fabricating cameras .
And for lenses you might consider Leica . ( Panasonic digi-cams have Leica lenses )

No matter what anyone says, there is no defined best. Everyone has a personal favorite based on experience.

For me, I prefer my Fujifilm S2 Pro and the S3 Pro. Is it better than the Kodak DCS 14n or the Canon EOS? No, not really. But out of personal experience I enjoy it better.

The CCD sensors are all too similar to be better (though some are larger offering the ability to print larger). But the CCD technology is pretty much the same (it's like comparing a gigabyte motherboard to an asus motherboard).

Besides, if a photographer believe his digital camera makes him a better photogrpher, he has a lot to learn. Heck, a professional photographer armed with a kodak disposable will photograph better than an amateur with a Digital Rebel (yeh, i've done it to prove it)

If you're talking about for the every day person, or new budding photographer just starting out, then I really have to give several big thumbs up to the Minolta Maxxum line. It's great for helping amateurs take great, professional looking photos & helping professional take even BETTER photos. It has wonderful pre-set auto settings that work great in all situations, as well as easy to manually set. It has several different selections for how you want to manually set your camera, as well.

The next one I really like is the Cannon Rebel.

as far as pictures and handling is concerned Nikon is stated to be the best with regard to picture quality as well as least maintenance .U sually starters start with Nikon SLR and remain loyal to the camera because of easy picture loading and easy focusing of objects.
