I suggest that you apply them to yourself first, look within and do not try to use them to judge or change others. Do not use them in intolerance.

Accept that it is OK to have feelings and opinions that differ from other peoples. Sometimes the truth hurts and seems really harsh, but know that it takes the truth for an open relationship (relationship meaning the way in which two or more concepts, objects or people are connected) to work.
I think it is important to say that sometimes we aren't aware of our true selves. People tend to have an image they portray to others and in doing so they loose their selves.

Actually, if you are of the group that I know that applies "To thine Own self be true" in a Spiritual sense, the answer may be more complex than that.
I'd say that there is a third Maxim needed... "Know Thyself". Some people are prone to self dilusion and only after revealing all they can about themselves, particularily their defects of character, to an understanding person, it can be hard to even know when you are being honest.

Dont live a life that contradicts your beliefs and if you believe that the bible is the truth, then you will need to obey God's commandments which can be summed up in one word - LOVE.
Whatever is hatefull to you, do not do to another.

means: if you're honest with yourself and about yourself you can't be fake to other people.
the truth will set you free....
means: you'll be free from the burdens of lies.. like remembering what lie you told to whom and the guilt that comes with lies in the long term. better to suffer the consequences of the truth at first than to suffer the consequences of a lie and the truth on top of it later.

The first is a humanistic statement, the second is Biblical. Trust the Bible! It also says "My Word is truth"

I would also add, "judge not, lest ye be judged" or "he who is without sin, cast the first stone" Both of those quotes are EXTREMEMLY important if you want to treat people kindly, and be treated kindly in return. It isn't for us to judge what is right or wrong. Different doesn't mean either.

Be truthful and honest to yourself first of all, then apply it to other people gradually and you cant go wrong.

Neither statement is scripture.
Basically, if it's wrong, don't do it, and, don't allow yourself into situations that tempt you to lie, like sneaking and hiding stuff.
