Just recently adopted this stray dog, she is around 5 years old. Most likely has had puppies. I have had her about 7 weeks, she was in heat when I got her. Now I have had her spayed, 7 days ago. Since then she has had a total character change. She's all shaky and only wants to hide out in her kennel. She is guarding this one toy and seems to be "nesting". I've taken her to the vet and she was on pain meds. The vet says he cant find anything wrong with her and she no longer seems painful, esp since she only started this toy guarding behaviour 5 days after her spay. Can anyone help? Is this hormone related?

It's possible, but I doubt that it's true "nesting". I suggest you speak to the veterinarian. I would bet the behavior is the reaction to great change in her lifestyle. It's very stressing for her.

It's definitely not false pregnancy since her uterus and ovaries are taken out. The toy guarding and nesting could possibly be that there are some leftover hormones running through her or just a habit if she's had puppies before. Especially if she was bred multiple times by her previous owner. I would definitely keep an eye on her and give her lots of love and affection, if she'll let you. If she seems scraed of you coming around then sit back and just talk to her very gently. You might even try to bribe her with treats. If she doesn't get better within a day or two talk with your vet again. If he still says there's nothing wrong and he doesn't suggest anything else, get a second opinion.

It is normal. I had my border collie spayed a year ago, after 3 litters of puppies. She has now taken to adopting my fat white cat as hers.
You can look outside at times and they are snuggled together like mother and child.

Your poor dog is just fretting, she needs time to settle in. Imagine if you went to live with new people and next thing you under go an operation...are in pain...with new surroundings....and the only thing giving you any comfort is a stuffed toy. Try bringing her into your house, spoiling her with hugs and patting her to reassure her she is OK. We adopted a dog last mothers day. She would cry in her sleep regularly, not eat at all when we first brought her home and stayed next to my husband like a shadow as he was the one who collected her and brought her home. She thought she was only visiting and wanted to go home. When we first took her for walks she would look at everyone to see if she could find her old owners. She was scared of every barking dog and would want to cross the street to avoid houses with dogs. One year later she loves us all and has forgotten about her past life......... I hope! P.S. If she doesn't settle in soon get her old owners to give you anything of hers from there house like her old blanket, toys, collar and lead.

Its perfectly fine, it means that she still has motherly instincs. Just because she was spayed doesn't mean she still won't act like a mother. Most female dogs will do this at least a time or two.

I've seen same behavoir in male dogs so prob not pregnant. i doubt its hormone but has been traumatised by the pain or perhaps abuse by previous owner or being in kennels for long time. dogs like stability keep to a regular scedule regarding walks meals play etc and don't try and force her to do obiedience training till she regains trust of you. keep punishments to minimum (isolation is best) and avoid spanking. it should pass in time
