My dog is 1/2 golden and has a laundry list of allergies. An antibiotic will not help with an allergy. Removing the source of the allergen will alleviate the symptoms. For my dog that means no chicken, wheat, eggs, lamb, or liver. I feed her Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice. I order her treats from www.petextras.com that are all single ingredient.
She is also allergic to something in the grass, but it only bothers her when the grass is active in the summer. This is more commonly called Summer Itch. Since elimiating grass from her world is not very practical, we keep our yard mowed and use hydrocortisone cream if there is a specific area on her body that is bothering her.

I have a chocolate lab but he has really bad allergies too. The vet used to give him shots but after a while they just dont do what they used to do to make him stop bitting and scratching. We have used all different kinds of shampoos and sprays but they also only work for so long. We started giving him the Benadryl, which works but it also makes him sleep all the time so we try not to give that to him that often. He is usually fine when we are home to make him stop but when he is home alone he goes nuts so we got him an Elizabethan collar. It was the only thing we could do to get him to stop.
Sorry it wasn't really good advice but I'm gonna watch this to see what other people come up with.

Goldens are not the only dogs that get allergies so I am not sure why you specified that ONLY golden owners can respond. Silly if you ask me....anyway, have your discussed with your vet the possiblity of food allergies? I had a dog with a food allergy and once we switched him to Nutro the problems disappeared. Try talking to your vet about this.
-Non-Golden Owner who answered this question anyway:)

I don't know about any baths or rubs, but my vet told me I could give my black lab 1/2 of a Benedryl. I know my dog isn't the same as yours, but they are about the same size, and I had to get allergy shots for my dog also. The Benedryl did help.

change your food...
Avoid common allergins like SOY, BEEF, WHEAT, CORN, PORK and Meat Meal (the mystery meat) and BY-Prodcuts
avoid treats than contain those things also - eg NO pigs ears or rawhide and no crap low quality treats like Milk Bone
LAMB AND RICE is considered hypo-allergenic food but some brands are not truely hypo-allergenic, they sneak in problem causers - you cannot get good food at Grocery store or Wal Mart and even Science Diet isnt good (vets were paid to endorse it making it high pirced crap)
If you are in Canada I strongly recommend NUTRAM if in the USA try Canidae or Wellness
treating the allergy will be forever.. not feeding allergy causing food will help forever... dont use carpet cleaners or crap like Febreeze , they cause allergies too

well, i WAS going to offer some suggestions, as i've had many dogs with allergies and have many remedies to offer. but since NONE of them were golden retrievers and you EXPLICITLY said only golden retriever owners can give you ideas...
