One of the best introductory books about Hinduism is actually the "Complete Idiot's Guide to Hinduism" by Linda Johnsen. The title is a bit unfortunate but it really is good! It is a very respectful presentation of the beliefs and customs.

Also a WONDERFUL book with many fabulous photographs is called "Meeting God: Elements of Hindu Devotion" by Stephen P. Huyler. You can in fact view many of these great photos here:

I also would recommend "The Camphor Flame" by CJ Fuller.
