paint your nails or get a gel or acrylic overlay. if you paint your nails it will taste nasty when you bite them and with the overlay you cant bite it because its so hard! and your nails will look pretty so you wont want to hehe :)

One day I read this and I haven't bit mine since...
"Most nail biters do not think, 'I love the taste of my fingernails and the feeling of tearing them down to the quick. I really need to consider doing it more often.'" -David Crowder
I'm not sure how it worked, but after reading the larger body of text about good and bad habits, I simply commited to stopping, and for some unexplicable reason, it was fairly easy to stop. I used to have quite the collection of bits of fingernail on the floormat of my car; kinda gross I know, but now it's all cleaned up now and I kind of look at it's cleanliness as both a small victory and an ever present goal for my determination and conviction.

There are all kinds of oils and creams that you can use that taste awful....but I stopped biting my nails by painting them with clear polish. For some reason I started nibbbling only to peel the paint off (instead of biting the nail), so I had to paint them very often. After a short period of time I just didn't bite my nails anymore.

well, you have already taken the first step, .i.e., you are now thinking that it is a problem and you want to get rid of it.....
Most of such harmless habits (like biting fingernails..etc) keep on occurring because they so much become part of the routine that we are no longer conscious about those....
And to get rid of the habits, the first step is being conscious about it... that way, whenever you bite your nail, your consciousness will kind of remind you about it and you'll stop for that instance.... and it will continue gradually until you reduce it a lot, all on your own...
same help you can get from your spouse/friend..... let them know that you want to be reminded of it whenever they find you biting nails .... so, you'll get chance to stop even more....
These habits are not addiction.... like cigarettes etc.... those are the ones that even if you are conscious, its hard to 'stop'.... but for these habits, its just the consciousness about it that would help.....
and then you can also take help from nailpolish etc...
Best of luck...

Don't get bored. Always find something that will keep you occupied so that theres no need to bite your fingernails. And whatever you do, dont stress as much or get nervous as that makes the situation worse and you'd keep doing it

put the nastiest tasting thing you can find on your fingernails for a week. if you can get past the taste of it and still bite your nauils, then you will never stop. if you cant and end up not biting them for a week, chances are you wont bite them again.

Have some sunflower seeds handy. Biting the husk to get at the seed is similar to biting your nails-and much tastier. Once you start, it's hard to stop. It's also good for cutting down on cigarettes.

Lots of answers already but I wanted to say that I was 30 when I quit chewing my nails (nail-chewing free for a year now).
The way I quit was to put a clippers in my desk - one on my keys - and one in the car. That way whenever I had the urge to bite I had a clippers handy. It worked.
Good luck - I know how hard it is!

well there are some kind of nail polish that taste awful and they're made just for that;
you could also try rubbing your nails with chili peppers; or instead of biting your nail chew a rubber toy :)
