"Shut up" means you want the human to stop saying something. "Shut down" means ceasing operation completely. If you shut down a human being, you haved killed the person, since there is no "on" switch.

It's because in humans, the mouth is closed by moving the mandible upward, and in computers, flipping the switch to turn it off is usually a downward motion.

i dont think they both mean the same..because it doesnt sound right to tell a person to shut down....or a computer to shut up....i dont think they do mean the same.
