I recently had root canal on an upper tooth because I was having pain in it. I was also having pain in the tooth directly beneath it. My endodontist assured me this was just "referred pain" from the upper pain and that after I have the root canal done on the upper tooth, the pain in the bottom tooth should disappear. Well, it hasn't. X-rays show nothing going on in the lower teeth so I am confused. Does anyone know what can be going on here?

Go back to the endodontist. Have him do an exam. He could reanesthetize the upper arch to see if the pain disappears. If it does, the pain is coming from the top arch. If the pain is still present, it is coming from the unanesthetized lower arch.
Sometimes it takes a number of days for the pain to dissipate. It doesn't necessarily mean he missed a root. It's inflammation! Use Advil 600mg q 6hours. Also be sure that he took the tooth out of occlusion. This will help. Good Luck!

Reffered pain can be a real female dog. If the pain is not getting less after a week (after the wound has healed) you should get help. A rootcanal can seriously mess up your perception of where you actually have the pain. Just think about the earpain when you actually have a rotten tooth. Be sure that *all* teeth are checked, even an ear or jaw infection could be the problem.

There are people that still have hurting leggs after they were removed because of an accident. Fantompain is not imaginary and hurts real bad.But in the case of teeth a lot still can be done.

I just had a root canal yesterday. it sucked. and its still pretty sore. Ive had 6 root canals already and Im only 28. if the dentist used any metal in your filling that could be why it still hurts. I forget what that kind of pain is called but it sometimes feels like an electric shock and its got something to do with other nerve endings in your head. but if your upped tooth is still just sore from the procedure then it makes sense that you still have referred pain in your lower tooth. either that or you need a new dentist. take some motrin.
