Depends on what state you are in. Some states now have a license insurance requirement. Meaning... If you have a drivers license issued in that state you are required by law to carry auto insurance on your license (even if you are not driving and even if you do not own a vehicle) otherwise your license can be suspended, at any time, until such coverage is obtained.

Other problems can include..
Suspended license, fines, tickets, jail time (usually for multiple offenses), impounded vehicles.
If you have an accident and are without insurance then you face being sued as well.

Doesn't matter what kind of work you're doing. Insurance is mandatory in all states.

Hefty fines -- $100.00 - $1,000.00 depending upon the state.

Loss of license for a period of time. 30 - 60 days typical.

Impoundment of the vehicle until you get insurance. (Towing and storage fees mount up rapidly.)

Confiscation of the vehicle in some states. You lose the vehicle for good in this case.

SR-22 in many states for 1 - 3 years. Very expensive.

Insurance rates go way up for 2 - 3 years typically. See the above item.

Should you have an accident while uninsured, you'd be sued. You could lose pretty much everything. If the damages were high, your wages could be garnished for decades to pay the claim.

You could be fired as a government emlpoyee, depending on what kind of work you do. Especially if your job requires you operate any type of vehicle, because they'll suspend your license. Many companies, if a job may in any way require you to operate a vehicle ask if your license has ever been suspended. Many also ask if you have a way to get to work. They view this as proof you are reliable. If you can't even manage your own affairs in a basic sense, why should they trust you w/theirs, is the attitude.
