If you already have a gmail account, there's a little bar on the left that says Chat and has a list of people below it -- move your mouse over one of the people's names and a little window comes up, you can choose to e-mail/chat with them there.
Green dots means they're on, red dots means they don't want to talk, gray means they're not on.
