Gaurd dogs should never be around children.
If you are looking for a dog that will deter strangers or burgurlars that would be any dog as they all will bark and that is enough to scare off people.
Dobermans are not great with kids some are good but over all not the best breed for kids. (I have owned them for 17 years)
Labs are good they are easy going and laid back they will work well in most family situations so will Goldens.
Do some research at www.akc.org
Look at the breed profiles of dog breed you like and see how much exercise and training it will take to keep that breed. Then look into to some rescues. They have great dogs and some are already house broken or good wih kids and are in need of a good home.
Good luck.

I have to agree with "Carla L", too. Rottis--WHEN PROPERLY TRAINED can be the biggest baby you'll ever have. And a wonderful watchdog. Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are wonderful for kids and again, if properly trained, can be good guard dogs. They are generally very good natured.
Stay away from Pits, Cocker Spaniels and Chows. Now before the bashing starts, yes there are wonderful dogs within these breeds, but remember, many are bred incorrectly in this country, so just be on the safe side.

This might sound alarming, but my mother has a rotti, and she is an awesom guard dog and is VERY protective of my kids. The dog will be 7 yr old in Oct. and she has been around my kids since she was 8 weeks old. She is a big baby, but will guard the house very well and is good around my kids.

I was told that guard dogs should never be around children. But you can get a watch dog that will alarm you when someone is around that shouldn't be. I think chihuahuas are great with kids and great watch dogs.

You don't want a guard dog. You do want a dog that is good with kids. Any dog will protect his turf and his family. So look for the dog that is good with kids.

Doberman pincher. But here is a cool pet selector to help you figure out what breed will work best with your family. This includes questions about fur coat care, allergies, and home environment.
