Facts show that spiders do climb onto the beds when hunting by night while human are sleeping. They go in search for insects, but not humans, of course. Yet spiders bite humans in their sleep, because people move while sleeping and roll onto them. Now, spiders do hide in small dark places, specially holes, and the thing is a mouth wide open when being asleep just appears as a good place to hide. That is true, but wait; first of all, we are breathing. That is hot air going in and out from our mouth, and the spiders know --in the way spiders can know something-- that such hole is not a place to be safe. There is also another thing : despite the fact that a person can be asleep, the inside of the mouth is real sensitive, and anything with legs crawling into our tongue is really enough to make us wake up. Even if awake does not happen, we will probably push back the spider with the tongue, or close the mouth inmediatly when something is over our face, or take it off with a sleepy hand.
So, chances of eating a spider while asleep ? REALLY LOW, unless you are very hungry.

Yes, I have heard this several times, and with varying numbers of spiders and varying time frames (from eight spiders during your lifetime to three every night).
There is no positive evidence for that. It might well be possible to swallow a spider while asleep, but that would not do any harm to a human being (unless it was one of the poisonous spiders).
The theory is even more unlikely, since spiders are very astute in their behaviour and usually avoid confrontations and danger very well. Personally I regard this as one of the many urban myths of our time (until someone can show me some concrete evidence that it happens).

I heard this but Im not sure how true it is. Its kinda hard to believe spiders just appear out of nowhere & head straight for your mouth. I would think they'd be turned away by the smell of morning breath frankly :) seriously though, I dont know about this one. Sounds gross but they say its true

Now how do you think they came up with an answer like that? Checked a 1000 people every night for their whole life?
In the tropics, or in the arctic? How long did those people live?

So they say ... I lost count of the sheep and you expect me to count the spiders?
Since I count the legs and divide by 4, I tend to count two spiders for every sheep ... when you are asleep, that gets confusing.
Now, of course I shall have dreams about knitting jumpers for spiders ... bother you for asking this question!
(We also eat a peck of dirt before we die ... hmm ... is it pecks in bushels or bushels in pecks - I never could remember.)

I suppose if you sleep with your mouth open and in a room covered in spiders, it's possible. Otherwise, this is a totally ridiculous myth.

I have heard that. I also heard that throughout your life, you are never more than 3ft away from a spider.
