I have a 2.5 yr old Dell Laptop with a celeron 2.3 GHZ processor and 256 mb of ram, im running Win XP. I have 18 GB of HD,I am using 9 GB. I have Mcafee Virus scan, and I even downloaded Spybot search and destroy, as well as spyware doctor. I ran the spyware doctor and it came back with 1100 items. I ran a spybot S&Dscan which returned 50 items. I then ran a MCafee scan and it came back with 7 viruses, and I deleted everything.

Now My computer is still very slow. I recently added a wireless adapter and connected to the internet. I notice that sometimes my computer seems to run a little faster and then boggs down.

I used the msconfig to turn off some programs at startup, such as

Real one player update,
Quicktime task,
Microsoft Money,
svcshost, & wvsvc (whats this?)
also a blank space where nothing was written,
adobe
outlook,
there is also a program running on startup called BCMSMMSG what is this?
What can I do?buy more Ram maybe? Can i upgrade this comp?

256 MB of ram is a bit low for these days. In terms of upgrading thats about all you can do. If your McAfee found 7 viruses sounds like it isnt running properly because it should have caught them when they hit your system. Did you pay for the updates? Its possible that its out of date. Viruses can slow down the machine.

BCMSMMSG is a vital driver for your modem in the laptop.
svcshost is spyware.
wvsvc is spyware/worm.

Sounds like your system may still be infected. Try to download a free virus software and let it scan. www.avast.com or www.grisoft.com for free ones.

check www.crucial.com for the proper memory for your laptop. an additional 256 would be good to add.

Run the disk defragmenter utility under the system accessories section. Also check your TEMP directories and delete all files.
You can also check the size of your paging file in the System Properties to make sure it's big enough.
A better spyware utility is called ADAWARE. It's available at Download.com. Freeware. Install and run it. Then keep up with the updates to also keep your system clear.

upgrading RAM would help, stick atleast 512 in there... also running other scanner tools... i use adaware and crap cleaner, and norton for viruses...

one thing i like to do after a while (depending how my machine is behaving) i format pc and start fresh.. it helps cuz now theres no junk on there from installing and unstalling software etc.. it might help 2.5 yrs is a while.. which could have put junk in the back ground.

that is what BCMSMMSG is
BCMSMMsg.exe is a vital component of the BCM voice modem drivers. This process is needed to ensure that your BCM modem works properly.

You could use another 256 MB RAM. Try disk cleanup - go to programs > accessories > system tools. After disk cleanup, you'll want to run the defragmentation utility (it also hangs out in the system tools.

Are you running XP sp2? Make sure you have the latest updates from Microsoft.

1. mcafee is a dog.. it will slow ur puta down heaps. try running you computer (not connected to the internet without mcafee). to see what i mean.

2. Download ewido to check for spyware too.

3. 256 meg of ram is way to small for xp.. u need at least 512 but better to have 1gig.

Buying 512 memory might be better than upgrading.
