You will find that somethings have reasonable prices (or cheaper than other place). The fun part is to deal with sales person about the price (usually the price may can go down the the 1/3 of the Price the sales person ask for). Also, if you like Chinese food, you will like Shanghai because this place has may different type of Chinese foods to let you try. Good luck and have fun.

I enjoyed the Jade Buddha temple.
It's also interesting to visit one of the Tea Houses - of course it's a rip off, but you spend an hour or so chatting with an old chinese person and have a bit of a sit down in the middle of the crowded city, and boy, is Shanghai crowded.

Depends what you fancy... Shanghai is a metropolitan that has all the "cool things" you desire. Local stuff you can do is to visit the old towns around the city. Go for the local opera.

depends on your interests...the shanghai museum is state of the art and extremely interesting if you're into that kind of thing...the subways are safe , fast and clean...the 1st level all the instructions are in chinese characters..but the fare is 2 kuai which you pay then descend to another level where the signage is in pinyin and character..much easier for me..and on the subway trains themselves the announcements are in english and mandarin.........also explore the Bund and adjoining Nan Jing Lu( a huge shopping street --more than a few kilometers long) and try to interact with the native people..they're great.
