Nehru, for one. Nehru brought India out of abject poverty after Britain left. Nehru united India and really cleaned house after Britain got kicked out. He divided Punjab into Udder Pradesh and Haryana. He took Goa from the Portugese. He virtually set to work to eliminate the poverty in the rural parts of India. He was so successful at doing that that, even before he died, India was producing its own food and was self sufficient before he even died.

That is really monumental when you think about it. It happened in less than 20 years. Compared at the same time with Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty in the United States, it is 50 years later and there has only been partial success.

I think Nehru did more for India than any other leader of the world did in his life time.

Second, Mohandas Ghandi. Ghandi changed the world. He made participatory democracy a reality all over the world. His work and example as a spiritual leader and as an activist inspired people all over the world to stand up to political corruption all over the world. His example inspired Martin Luther King to end segregation in America; it inspired Desmond Tutu to end Apartheid in South Africa. He inspired students in China to stand at Tienamen Square. Ghandi taught the world that pacifism was a far superior tool for civic engagement than violence.

It is difficult to decide which I would put first, because both of them were such inspiring people.

The third was Indira Ghandi. I think as a feminist and as a social activist she was truly inspiring. She continued to develop went further to develop the social policies and economic reforms that her father, Nehru, was so successful in doing. Indira Ghandi was truly one of the outspoken and professional of all feminist leaders of her time.
