In geographical terms America is a double continent, and until recently was seen and treated as one entity. However, the more modern attitude is to split the continent into two, North and South America. People also refer to them now as "the Americas". This makes some sense, since there are strong cultural differences.
However, Mexico, which would culturally belong to the South, is geographically part of the North.
