My Mom, Husband, his three friends and I were on our way (driving) to Mexico and we stopped at a Walmart in Oklahoma. We were standing in line at the cashier and two old men were standing behind my Mom. She offered to let him in front of her because he had only 2 items. He declined and said he was not in a hurry. As my husband, who was in front of me, and his friends checked out, they started to talk, one said to the other, "How many Mexicans did they say were in the US?" The other quickly replied "4 too many". My Mom, turned and said, "You shouldnt talk about them, they are with me!" The men shut up. My husband and his friends did nothing to provoke them, nor were acting up in any way, why would they be so rude?

in regards to the not-so-friendly ghost, I think my Mom did just that! By telling them right to their face! Mexicans are not any more special than anyone else, but they deserve the same curtosies!

It is interesting that people are NOT answering my question, they are using it as a soapbox for their anti-immigrant opinions. I never mentioned anyone's legal status, this is about the racism that we encountered in the above-mentioned question.

My question is under the category "Immigration" because the guys reaction to my husband is due to all the TV coverage of the immigration right now, plus the fact that he is a racist.

No manners at all. They should atleast have waited til you guys left to make those comments. My guess is they were purposely trying to get a reaction. Some people are so stupid they don't think before they speak. Maybe one day they will run into the wrong person someone not as kind as your family.

Granted the US was made of immigrants but at least they were mostly respectful and understood that in another country you conform to a great extent to what the country currently has as a standard. (Speaking the language, respecting the government and so on...You wouldn't expect to have China cater to you if you migrated there now would you?) There recently has been great disrespect shown to the US by people living here, some times illegally, and it is making many people angry. There is a feeling of "If you don't like it here then go back where you come from." It's in no way proper for them to hang the flag from their country above ours, on our soil (and hang ours upside-down) attending our schools.
Yes the US was made of immigrants but they all showed a reasonable amount of respect, learned the language and served the country.

That is unfortunate you had to experience that. People shouldn't harass other people like that. It's wrong. The problem is though that so many illegal immigrants have come over and now many many people are very angry. That is not you or your families fault but that is the reason why. This whole problem has come to a head and a lot of people are in fear for their country. This is what happens when laws are not enforced and people continue to break them. If you are Hispanic, I'm sorry you experience this but many Americans are not accepting you with open arms at the moment because your people are at the frontline of many of our countries problems and we are worried. I am an American with American values and an American culture. I do not want my culture to be mixed with yours. I don't want to speak your language and I don't want to get paid what your people think is an acceptable living wage and I don't want to pay someone else's medical bills. Mexicans and Hispanics are changing this country. People fear it. It's cool for you, and I respect your culture but most Americans do not want it amalgamated with yours.

First of all it is Oklahoma, Second it is Walmart in Oklahoma and Third it is old white men in Oklahoma. The combination called for it. You shouldn't be surprised that is acceptable in their social circles which is probably only from one race in one socioeconomic level. They faced no serious consequence of this action and it probably wasn't even a blip on their screen. You shouldn't become paranoid either that every situation will be like this but don't be too shocked either, your Mom was right to voice her opinion. That is probably the best you could have done, then just shrug it off.

What those men did was wrong, but illegals running around in the streets of America waving Mexican flags and demanding rights ignited a firestorm of resistance and resentment against them. I have found myself bristling when I hear people speaking Spanish when I'm out and about, and it never affected me like that before. We are just super sensitized, angry, and fed up with this situation as it stands. It may get worse before it gets better.

The marching illegals have declared a cultural war against the US and its values. They refuse to obey the laws while in this country and many are felons, whose wives and children collect welfare etc and other benefits. If this continues we will seriously harden the border and seriously deport illegal aliens of any race. Or even cheaper, make it a serious criminal offense to hire them. Get over it the challenge has been made and this country will respond as it always does.

I believe the rude person here was your idiot mom who turned and interrupted two free Americans exercising their right to free speech. I think all you self centered liberal buffoons might want take your own advice and mind your own business. If we were any other country your pitiful a.s.s illegal aliens would be rounded up and sent back to their own country .Which is what should be done in this country.

If you think that is racism, you have never seen true racism. What the two men said was a simple statement. Racism would be if the two men walked up to you and your friends and pushed them out of their way or ran you out of the store just because they we different.

Typically a decent education eliminates or significantly reduces racism. Not always, but usually... Consider the source I guess.
