Why do “Christians” know so little about the Bible?

Jesus said that the FOOLISH build their house (faith) on the sand, but a WISE builds their house of a firm foundation (proof).

He goes on to warn against BLIND faith saying that if the blind (those without scriptural proof) follow the blind, they both fall into the ditch. If a person is lead by the blind or false teachings only, they overlook key scriptures that point the way.

Such scriptures as:

Genesis 2:7; “..and man BECAME a living soul (Hebrew: Nephesh).” Note: he was not GIVEN AN IMMORTAL SOUL.

Genesis 6:15; “… length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it, fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.” Note: ark shaped like a rectangle not boat.

Psalm 78:69, Isaiah 14:18, Numbers 14:21, Genesis 8:21 and Ecclesiates 4:1:”… but the earth abideth FOREVER” Note: Earth NOT going to be destroyed again.

With a correct understanding, there is no contradictions and TRUTH agrees with science.

bminus215, Babara_J, eefen and rocketscientist is a typical of the vain shallow “Christian” answers.
Adder_Astros, pretty good insight into human emotion and need.
Apparently some of the readers did not read the scriptures very well. Genesis 8:21 “…I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake, neither will I again smite any more everything living as I have done.” Did God LIE here? Also, Ecclesiastes 1:4 is very clear saying “the earth abideth FOREVER.”

For those not comprehending that Jesus WAS referring to blind faith (like eefen) needs to go back and read the entire surrounding text. Matthew 7: 24-27 Therefore whosoever HEARS these sayings of mine, and DOETH them, I will liken him unto a wise man …” It is very clear Jesus was saying their faith had to be based on his true words. It is not blind faith if it is based on EVIDENCE or his sayings.

This failure to understand the text they are preaching to everyone else in the reason for my question.

Rocketscientist; Not my best comeback, just limitations in space and number of characters. The gross oversights of Christendom can fill volumes … besides, It seems from your other post that you agree with me. A. Man IS a soul rather than GIVEN one; B. The Ark was rectangular and C. The EARTH will never be destroyed.

You could have had a best answer but were too quick to tear something down before reading it.

Kithy, Revelations 1:1 shows that this book was give in SIGNS or symbolic. Further more the “EARTH” here is a mistranslation. It was not referring to a literal earth but the WORLD of mankind, no more than the “Heavens” that were going to be destroyed referred to God’s actual throne. Yes, there will be a new EARTH in the same sense that a Christian becomes a NEW person in Christ. The person is not literally destroy, only the personality.

In doing so, in their minds, they get to keep their air of Authority. Remember, Christianity is like a poor man's Aristocracy. All of the saved people get to go to Heaven and be perfect while the unsaved friggin' don't. They're be like Kings and Princes and stuff compared to slaves and paupers.

In order to keep their Aristocratic status (in their mind, anyway) they have to be every bit as knowledgeable of GOD and his word as their Preacher (or whatever the Hell they have), so whenever they are asked a question, they'll answer it. Sometimes the answer sounds like crap because it's the best they have. Sometimes the answer sounds extremely generic, which means someone already padded it (which means no one they know really understand that issue). Sometimes they just say, "Read the Bible" or "I'll pray for you" which means that you have broken their confidence and they no longer wish to answer your mean ol' tough questions.

The alternative would mean abdication of their throne. No chance in Hell of that happening.

I read the Bible. And when Jesus was talking about the metaphorical houses, He was talking about putting ones trust in things; about putting ones trust not in things of this world but in things not of this world. And when talking about the blind leading the blind, He is talking about the spiritually unsaved leading the unsaved, and they both fall into hell. And in regards to Genesis 2:7, for one to live forever with God when they die, they have to start by LIVING, don't they? And for Genesis 6:15, I have never stated that the ark was not a rectangle, but can't a boat have the same dimensions? And about the earth abiding forever, the only verse that references that out of the ones you listed is the one is Psalms. And it doesn't even say "BUT the earth abiding forever.". There is no error in the Bible, and although some Christians may not know the Bible inside out, it would be wiser of you next time to not make such a generalized statement. Hope this helps clear things up for you, and God bless!

You obviously are unlearned in the scriptures. Out of the six or so points you were trying to make, only two are correct:

1) "If a person is lead by the blind or false teachings only, they overlook key scriptures that point the way."

2) "Genesis 2:7; “..and man BECAME a living soul (Hebrew: Nephesh).” Note: he was not GIVEN AN IMMORTAL SOUL"

All of the rest of your points are non-sequitur.

Mixing the truth with lies has always been one of Satans most useful ploys. But he is "blind" and whoever follows him is blind and kept from the truth. (Watch out for that ditch!)

Is that your best comeback? I could have been much harsher for your ignorance, but chose to be fair and truthful.

Not quite sure where you are going with this, but it seems to me many Christians think that once they believe, the only time need to ever really read the bible is when they are throwing verses at Non-Christians.

And for your quotes about the earth never to be destroyed again, please look at Revelation. It states very clearly that Heaven and Earth will be destroyed and a New Heaven and New Earth shall be made... and the New Jerusalem shall come down from heaven where God himself will live. So comparing to the verses you gave, there is definitely a contradiction here.

It seems that a lot of Christians treat the Bible like Prego spaghetti sauce.
They know, or think it's in there somewhere but they don't know where and don't intend to look it up themselves.
but then these are the same ones that are so easily led astray by some slick preacher.

Amen. I think they might have trouble with sticking with the provisions of Leviticus, too. Not many Christians stoning their sons for being disrespectful, taking slaves, burning sacrifices, staying away from their wives when the wives are "unclean." Hope they do not eat those shrimp, either.

At first I thought you were asking a question. My answer would have been NOT ALL CHRISTIANS DON'T. One of my pet peeves is lumping together everyone and making blanket statements like that. Sorry.
