Gelato, the Italian word for ice cream, is a European style ice cream It is different from its American counterpart in that it is denser since it is made with less air and includes less butterfat cream or lower butterfat cream, which eliminates the greasy palate caused by a lot of fat.

Gelato differs in ice cream in that it has a much lower cream content. It is much more popular in Italy than ice cream.

Gelato tastes better than ice cream, it is creamier and richer. Italian gelato is the best, never found anything as good in the US. Favorite flavor is gianduja--chocolate and hazelnut, yum!
Once you try the real thing you'll know why it is so popular in Italy.

i've always thought that 'gelato' is just an italian term for 'ice-cream'. i've never considered anything in the difference of taste.

To answer your question very simply, gelato contains no cream, ice cream does contain cream. Hope you're not confused anymore.
