There really are no early stages of Herpes. Maybe you are thinking of syphilis, which has four stages.

With herpes you have an initial or primary outbreak, and then you have reoccurring outbreaks. The initial one is the most painful, I had to call off of work for a few days. The reoccurring ones usually happen a few times a year and less often as the years pass. I have one outbreak if that a year.
