My doctor did an insulin level test and said my level was too high. He called it hyperinsulinemia. He said it is a precursor to diabetes and recommended I start metformin (glucophage) to help the insulin level come back down to normal range. And also the medicine would help the insulin work better. I queston using a diabetes medicine if I do not have diabetes. He said it was to prevent it from getting worse. Does anyone have additional information?

I do not really understand diabetes and how insulin works. Info on that would be helpful as well.

Hyperinsulinemia is a marker of Insulin Resistance, which can be considered as a state of predisposition to Diabetes Mellitus. But, I don't think starting Metformin is necessary as a precaution. The most common cause of Insulin Resistance is Obesity.

If you are obese, bring down your weight near normal by diet and exercise with the help of a diabetologist and dietitian. If you have a family history of Diabetes, you have more chances of progressing towards the disease from the current stage of Hyperinsulinemia.

Before starting Metformin, I would advise you to undergo an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. Based on the report, you can decide on your further plan of action. I am ready to help if you need it.

Diabetes occurs when insulin is insufficient or your body is somehow reistant to insulin .Because of the resistance, body secrets more and more insulin to keep the normal glucose level in the blood.Physical exercise, and reduction of body weight and reduction of stress reduces insulin resistance.Meanwhile, because excess of insulin in the blood is also bad for the body, some drugs can be prescribed till you are able to control it by diet/other means.

My aunt has it badly, if they get it under control now you may not have to take the insulin shots, and just the pills. It sounds like your body is not always make the right about of insulin, but it not totally stop making it either. If i was you, I would get a second opinion on it.
