Ive been a super strict veggie for about 10 years. Always stayed away from any kind of gelatin, including 'kosher'. But....is kosher still vegetarian safe? Or should I stick to my pectins?

:)

I say you go eat a steak right now! .... mmm... steak.... butchered meat ... hickery chips. mmmm

I appologize for not really answering. I was a veggie for 7 years (lacto/ovo), so I know the pains of figuring out what to eat. Kosher geletin might not be made from pig bones... but maybe they use other animals?

kosher gelatin is usually made out of the marrow from the bones of a kosher animal, such as a cow. That is all that makes it "kosher." Non-kosher gelatin may be from a non-kosher animal such as a pig. So in other words, unless it specifically says "vegetarian" then it is NOT vegetarian.

"kosher" doesn't mean it comes from a non-animal source, or that the animals were treated any more humanely. it only means the gelatin comes only from bones and skins, which jewish law considers not to be either meat or dairy. so no, if you are opposed to eating gelatin for moral reasons, avoid kosher gelatin.

Check the label out to see what the source of gelatin is; if it's agar agar, it's fine. E-mail the manufacturers if the label is insufficient.

As a vegan, I would tell you to stick to pectins. Even if labeled "pareve" which is supposed to be meat and dairy free, the Kashrut consider fish pareve.
