IN AMERICA (gotta make that distinction because in most of the world, HIV is spread heterosexually), it is true that HIV is currently more prevalent in the population of men who have sex with men (aka "MSM," the ones you might call "gay," but may choose not to call themselves that).

Men who only have sex with other men are a fairly confined population. They stay within their circles, and if HIV gets into the population, it goes around quickly. that's why on average, you wind up with more cases of HIV per capita among MSM than MSW (men who have sex with women).

The MSW pool is bigger, so it is less confined. Sure HIV goes around, but it just isn't nearly as prevalent as it is in high-risk groups (MSM, drug-users, prisoners).

Does this mean AIDS is a gay disease? No. Africa is a fine example of what happens with heterosexual transmission.

USA:Note that the discrepancy amount is more than half of the total amount reported
At the end of 2004, the CDC estimates that there were 462,792 people living with HIV/AIDS in the 35 areas that have a history of confidential name-based HIV reporting, based on reported diagnoses and deaths4. However, the total number of people living in the USA with HIV/AIDS is thought to be between 1,039,000 and 1,185,0005. The discrepancy between these figures is due to several factors including:

confidential name-based reporting of HIV diagnoses has not yet been implemented in all states6
anonymous tests, including home tests, are excluded from case reports
one in every four people living with HIV has not even had their infection diagnosed, let alone reported.7

48% of the people living with HIV are Women, and lesbian women are the least affected... so if you think that this women are having sex with gay men, well you might want to go get tested, and soon.

Currently, the most common route for HIV transmission is unprotected oral between heterosexuals, especially young heterosexuals. What a tragedy! HIV transmission is SO preventable!
