My son has been dying to own/have/learn to skateboard so I decided to get him one for a Christmas present. He currently borrows one from a (not so nice) neighourhood kid and I'm not so sure he has received *correct* instruction/advice from the kid on skateboarding.

I have NO IDEA what to look for and I'm scared I'm going to get taken advantage of when skateboard shop people realize I know nothing. I called the local skateboard shop to ask about price range and they rattled off a bunch of stuff about hardware and long/short boards (???!!! - they don't come ASSEMBLED??) and *packages*.

DH (who also knows nothing about it) said "just go to Walmart"! Wouldn't that be like trying to order lobster at McDonalds?? Or would some place like that have something useful?

Money IS an object for us; we can't afford anything really high-end and wonder if going cheaper compromises my sons safety.
