My son has been dying to own/have/learn to skateboard so I decided to get him one for a Christmas present. He currently borrows one from a (not so nice) neighourhood kid and I'm not so sure he has received *correct* instruction/advice from the kid on skateboarding.

I have NO IDEA what to look for and I'm scared I'm going to get taken advantage of when skateboard shop people realize I know nothing. I called the local skateboard shop to ask about price range and they rattled off a bunch of stuff about hardware and long/short boards (???!!! - they don't come ASSEMBLED??) and *packages*.

DH (who also knows nothing about it) said "just go to Walmart"! Wouldn't that be like trying to order lobster at McDonalds?? Or would some place like that have something useful?

Money IS an object for us; we can't afford anything really high-end and wonder if going cheaper compromises my sons safety.

Ooops....forgot to mention - in case anyone is thinking of suggesting places to look.....we live in Canada and do have access to a major city within 2hr drive.

When my oldest son wanted a skate board for the first time, we got him one from Walmart. At 10 years old,you don't know if they will stick with it. The most important thing is getting him protective gear. Make sure he has a helmet, knee and elbow pads, and hand guards. As my son got older and became better at skateboarding,he got more expensive boards. He is now 25 and still rides a board. My youngest son (10) just requested a skateboard this summer. Again we went to Walmart. This time I'm glad we went that route because after a few falls he has decided he likes rollerblading much better.

listen to me. I know what I'm talking about whereas others have no clue and are just trying to help when really they aren't helping at all.
Go to a skateshop. NOT WALLMART. There will be many. Pickout something he likes with good bearings and all. Ask the person at the skateshop for help. They won't take advantage of you. Get preferably a 7.5 (that's the size of the deck). Completes come in many pieces but if you buy one the shop will assemble it if you ask for free. And if the kid really wants to learn then why in the world would you wait till christmas? That's rediculous. Just get it now and tell him it is an early christmas present. It's still an x-mas present just sooner. A learning kid can learn a ton between now and x-mas.
