When I was seven my family moved to Shreveport, Louisianna from Minniapolis, Minnesota. At the time I was a pretty devout little christian, but I also was raised by pretty rebelious parents who had gone to UW Madison (which sums it up there), so I was pretty open minded and tolerant of other people and their religions. Soon after I moved there I quickly became friends with a kid on my street who also had just moved to Louisianna from N. Carolina.

One day we were playing toy guns, and I brought up evolution, which in my family has always been accepted. My friend, being a very devout Baptist told me that I was going to go to hell and at the moment he ran inside his house and got his mom to come out. She then read to me a series of passages from the bible 'explaining why' I will go to hell. Thus began my decline in faith in a religion that discourages rational thought.

One day I went to church with my friend to a baptist megachurch. There I went to a bible school class which...

consisted of over a hundred kids. when asked if I believed in evolution I answered yes and was then put into the corner of the room for the rest of class. Now I'm 17 and a buddhist and I've never felt more complete.

Greetings!

I'm giving you ONE GIANT STANDING OVATION!!!!!

YEAHHHHHHH! HOOORRRRAAAAYYYY!

Thanks for opening your eyes and seeing your truth.

Resistance is NOT futile!!!

to Texas Chic... have you studied Buddhism? Have you studied any of the other 10,000 documented religions / belief systems in the world besides your own? Within Christianity, there are a documented (by a Christian, no less) 34,830 denominations. How many denominations of your own faith have you studied / practiced?

If you've only studied the one "version", and have no knowledge of Buddhism, how could you possibly make a claim that the questioner's fulfillment would be a hundred times greater by knowing Christ? It's like saying "chocolate is better than vanilla", WITHOUT EVER TASTING VANILLA!

The issue I take with devout _____ (fill in the blank) is that they usually eat one food from a GIANT spiritual buffet and then browbeat others who choose to eat something different.

I wish you Peace.

After reading all the above answers, i wonder about two things:

1.) Nice story but it sounds a bit fishy in some details. Nevertheless I'll accept it at face values and ask you why you found peace in one religion, but not the other? Could it be that there is no "God" there?

2.) If atheists are against religion, why are you so happy about him becoming a Buddist? Last I looked, it was a religion. Or do you only think Christianity is evil?

I am a Christian, but I cannot blame you for the way you went.

I just want to say that God is not in the least pleased with the thoroughly ignorant approach of those you have described. Their outlook and manner are outrageous.

It is hard to describe the depth of exasperation stories like yours inspire.

It sounds to me that you've held your nose just high enough above the surface in the deepest parts of the Bible-belt-cesspool to survive being drown by it.

You'll be okay from here on out... Good for you.

I was forced into Christanity by my mum and forced in Seventh Day Adventism by my dad as a kid.

Being a strong minded person & open minded I explored the world of religion until I found one that fit perfect for me.

Sounds like you did the same thing.

I dont particularly believe in "organised religion" that has devout rules & regulations. I think this is misconstrewed by vulnerable people that need something to believe in.

Dont ever let others opinions harden your views on any set religion. Make your own decision and understand others motivations for saying what they do.
