other old lady who had him all his life up and died last week at age 90, what would you name the little old guy? Since his hearing is lousy, I don't think a name change will confuse him much. Right now he goes by "Radar" due to the fact that he always finds his way around even outside to pottty. However, I am thinking of a more classical, perhaps Greek or Roman name. Wasn't there a blind philosopher? Anyhow, aside from the fact that this pitiful doggie geezer is blind and deaf, he's healthy as a poodle can be. And tor someone who in dog years is 98, that's pretty amazing. Names, please!

He might have a hearing loss but perhaps there are sounds that he can pick up. Changing his name would not be a good idea as it will be confusing. I commend you for taking on this pet and giving him a loving home for the rest of his life. Good for you and Happy New Year.

I think Alastair is nice. It is Greek and means "Protector of mankind." If you do not like it go to www.babynameworld.com. It has names from around the world and tells you the meaning and which gender it goes with. I do like Radar, though. Babynameworld is a good site with millions more Greek and Roman choices. Best Wishes, A.S.

i think it's absolutely wonderful that someone like you is willing to bring an older animal into your home and love him until the end of his days. his owner would be very happy to see her beloved boy still valued and cherished.
as for names, i do like radar too, although i don't think changing his name will do him any harm. if he'd been found as a stray, his name would have been changed & he'd have adapted just fine. here are some blind folks i found in history:
• Homer (who wrote the iliad & the odyssey) was a blind greek poet.
• Didim of Alexandrie - blind greek philosopher
• louis braille created the braille system for reading. (he could go by louie)
• samson - biblical hero with loss of sight
• matt murdock - "daredevil" (of comics & movie) who was blind (he could go by murdock)
• eros/cupid - god of love (because love is often blind too, lol)

I think you should honor the love the lady who owned him had for him by calling him whatever she called him.

I don't think it will hurt to change his name. Dog's adapt quickly to a different name if you use it ofter.
I do agree I like Radar. I have a Min. Schnauzer named Radar, because his ears are HUGE.
I really want to commend you for taking the poor old guy in. So many people would just take him to a shelter or put him down. I have adopted two elderly dogs, one her owner had to be put in a nursing home and none of the family would take her. The other was 12 and the owner could not longer keep her. You will really get attached, so be ready for that. When I lost these two dogs it was as hard as if I had been with them all of their lives. For the Doberman it was even harder.
You are a very kind person and whatever name you choose he is a very luck guy.

Don't change the dogs name, yes the dog will know, but may not respond to you calling it by another name, even if partially deaf, dogs are intelligent...

Don't change his name. Lets see, he's 1/2 deaf I don't think he'll be listening to you anyways even if he wanted to he can't hear you and or see you!
