I started babysitting at age 11, but I babysat kids 3 and up. I was 13 when I started baby sitting kids under the age of 3 unless they were my younger brothers or sisters.
My daughter is 12 and baby-sits children 1 and up, and will be a mother's helper to babies, but baby-sits my 9 month old daughter.
At 10, I would suggest they become a mother's helper just to help out and no real baby-sitting until 11 or 12, and make sure they have their Red Cross Certificates.

Read this and then contact your local community college or community center to find out about courses near you. I took the course and so did my daughter and you can get jobs faster and you'll know how to handle an emergancy.
I'm also a social worker and have seen many cases where a baby-sitter has molested or harrassed the child. I suggest that the baby-sitter be responsible at all times and by any means NEVER EVER shake or touch a child innapropriately. And NEVER EVER put a child in a dark closet or room for time-out. Lastly NEVER EVER sleep in the same bed as the child.

Depends if the babysitter is responsible enough but probably around 15, 16 no younger than 14
Because there was a show on 20/20 that a girl was charged with murder when she was babysitting and she was only 13 accused of shaking the baby violently.

It's not so much the age of the child it's the child's maturity. If your looking for age I would say no younger then 11, prefably 13-18 would be my recommendation. See babysitters have to be attentive, be able to interact well with kids, possibly cook, change diapers, help with homework etc.

12 or 13. Unless the child is not responsible enough then wait until there 14-16 years.
I am twelve and we are not little kids anymore we are able to take care of ourselves and others now.

i think it all depends on how responsible the child is, if he/she isnt really responsible maybe 15-16.
it also depends on how old this kid there babysitting is.
i'd ahve to say 14 or older.
