Contrary to popular thinking, beer does 'go-off' if it is too old, rather than 'improving with age'.

Over time oxidation occurs which ruins the taste.
Or, if cleanliness was not followed in the making of the beer, the wrong type of organism might have gotten in, and spolied the beer.

The taste of skunk beer is self explanatory!

All kinds of things could go wrong with a beer. Oxidation, skunking, loss of overall flavor, development of off flavors... Conversely all kinds of things could go right in a beer. I just had a Thomas Hardy's Old Ale from 2005 last night and it was delicious, it tasted almost sherry like. For the most part an old beer just lacks its "oomph." All the flavors start to kind of diminish and clash, generally starting with the hops.

Most beers will be fine for drinking a few months past their expiration, it's just likely that they won't be all that great. Only a handful of beer styles age well so most beers are best drank fresh. It's not going to kill you though.

Expiry date? What next, planned obsolution? I wonder what my expiry date is? Well I guess I'll find that out eventually. I don't think it ever occurred to me to look for an expiry date on a beer can or bottle. Must be OK to drink.

Prolly not bad at all. Maybe a lil skunked and flat. Drank six pack of Miller Lite few years ago in my teen years that expired in the 80's, The absolute worst thing I've ever drank.

I drank an expired beer in a fancy Belgian beer hall without realising in August of this year. Whilst I noticed a slightly funny taste it wasn't until I finished it that I noticed it was 3 or 4 months out of date. That night I was incredibly ill, and spent my last night in Brussels in the hotel bathroom. I wouldn't recommend it if it expired in August 07, let alone August 06.
