i have bitten my nails for many years they are extremely short any shorter and the would bleed i also bit the skin around the sides of the tip. some of them are rounded at the tip and some are square. i have never pushed back my cuticles so they are long and i get lots of "hangnails"(the little things of skin that come up some times) and i would like to get my nails to be healthy and pretty looking. so what i am really asking is where should i start and what should i do. and i dont really have enough money to go out and get a big manicure or whatever but i can buy things at the store if its not to expensive. so please if you can help with even a little bit it would be appreciated.

wow that was a lot of answers so quickly! the problem isnt really biting the nails i have some of that clear polish that tastes horrible. its just that they are so short now that they are growing out side ways into the skin where the tips are.

Buy Stick on or glue on fake nails, that way when you try to bite them, you'll tast plastic.

Go for a manicure, lots of places are not that expensive, like ten bucks, call a couple of places.

If you address the hangnails, you may be less inclined to bite the skin or nail.

This is an easy start. Every time you wash your hands, make sure the water is warm and you use a gentle hand soap. As you dry your hands push the cuticle back with the hand towel. It doesn't have to be far, every little bit helps. Then follow up with hand lotion, and work that in around your nails. Vaseline Hand and Nail is a good choice.

The hand lkotion doesn't taste good, and the better condition of the skin and nail will be less apt to draw your hand to your mouth.

Treat yourself to a professional manicure. It only costs about $6.00 - $10.00. They will get you started getting the cuticles in shape.

at the store they have something you put on your nails that tastes horrible, it helped me. also cut your cuticles, its good for your nails. vitamin e or over the counter pre natal vitamins help your nails grow faster. manicures where i live are only ten dollars if you go to the right places. they arent always as expensive as you think check around. it would definitely be helpful

If you fingernails are in that bad condition already, I wouldn't reccomend doing anything yourself because you could just be making it worse.

Just a manicure at the local nail salon won't be that expensive, and sometimes they will give out discounts if you are there for the first time or if you are under a certain age.

If you go to the salon, you can make your nails healthier and your hands softer by asking for a paraffin wax. It's not really a wax, they just melt a special candle wax and wrap it around your hands for a while, and usually its not more than $5.

You should invest in a intensive repair hand cream though; it will help heal your cuticles and make the skin around your nails healthier around your nails. If you don't really care about the scent of the hand cream, then you can try Eucerin or Aquaphor, since they don't really have a scent. If you do, then try something at a beauty store, like Sephora.

i do this and ppl tell me i have magezine nails. let them grow out and start using any brand legthing and stregthening nail polish and thats where it starts becoming more durable, and you can be plier looking sissors for cutting the "hangnails" and everyso often i cut my cuticles using the tool and file nails more square then round, looks better. all you need is a nice nail care set and nice polish, i would recomend any from the sally hanson section, they work the best. once you get the desired style and feel, opi has really nice colors, but sally hanson is sort of "medication for nails"

You should go to any beauty store and buy cuticle tools and cuticle oil. Also buy nail hardener (use two coats). Some nail hardeners come with green tea in them which nourishes the nail and helps it become healthy and grow. Then you should have beautiful nails. Avoid putting on fake nails because when you do take them off, your nails with be so brittle and thin. It will talk forever for them to grow thick and healthy again.

a story. when I was in high school I bit my nails same as you, one day my thumb started to swell, it got to twice normal size and very painful before I asked for help, mom took me to the doctor and he said my thumb was infected, they burned a hole in the nail and a lot of nasty junk came out, the nail eventually fell off and I never bit my nails again. try keeping them painted if you can't stop. or chew gum.

i really really would splurge just a little and get the manicure. They can give you tips or fake nails and it will give your real nails a little rest. If you to just the local nail salon it shouldn't be too much money. It will make you feel so much better. Good luck!
