I can assure you you are not going mad, as I can identify with your situation completely. As an example, I had just been discharged from hospital and I still had my stitches in, when a so called friend came to see me. Instead of asking how I was (bloody awful) all she wanted to talk about was herself and her problems, which have been the same problems for the past three years. You have probably listened to people's problems in the past, and now they think they can off-load all their negativity on to you. After these people have off-loaded themselves on to you, they will feel much better, but you will be feeling emotionally drained. I have been to churches and different Spiritual venues and you would think "spiritual people" would act differently, but all I found was people bragging about their "good deeds" they have done. I have found people to be totally selfish and good manners have seem to be a thing of the past. Nobody seems to be interested in how you are feeling and as long as they are talking about themselves which usually involves an over sized inflated ego, they are happy. On a positive note, it is obvious you are a very sensitive and kind-hearted person and people trust you, as they would not open up to you. Remember there are people who do care, myself being one of them. I have animals now, who will love you unconditionally. On the last note you are certainly not going mad!!

Sometimes I think people talk about themselves because they don't get much attention otherwise in their lives. Have you ever noticed that most of the talk is very, very dull? Most humans will pay polite attention to these talkers, but like you said, it is real hard work.

You are not going mad. If patience can't get you through, maybe you should just walk away.

Nope, people are selfish these days and it's getting worse. My best friend of 30 years doesn't even ask about my kids when we talk on the phone a couple times a month. I always ask about hers, she never mentions mine. I listen to her life and she couldn't care less about mine. So welcome to my world lol. But seriously, if you can't find people who are interested in you at least as much as they are themselves, I'd keep to myself until someone decent comes into your life. It's exhausting when you are constantly frustrated over someone else's flaws. Poop on 'em!

Welcome to the real world..

I don't think you are going mad, I talk about myself all the time and I think it is my right to do so, if someone can't hanlde it, he/she can walk away just I like I do when I can't stand others talk about themselves non-stop.. Don't let this bother you, life is too short...Have a drink..

You are not going mad. You have found one of the basics of people. The most important thing to them is them. Learn that now and work it and they will eat out of your hand.

Find ways to get them to talk about themselves even more! Learn to guide their revelations so that they'll tell you things about themselves that you'd want to know or could find useful in working with them. One wonderful book about this is Dale Carnegie, "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Another is Les Giblin's "How to Have Power and Confidence in Dealing with Others." Both of these books should be read, and they both come from a win-win point of view, and if you can master the techniques in those books, you will be able to achieve much more than if you just think all those people who only want to talk about themselves are such a bore that you'd rather not talk to them!

You're not crazy. Everyone does it. Even you want to talk about you. But it is really nice when you're asked. Just learn to be a good listener.
