If you live in northern New Jersey, or the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, or Staten Island, "going into the city" means Manhattan. (Yes, even though the outer boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island are just as much parts of New York City as Manhattan is, Manhattan is thought of as "the city" and the other boroughs are "Brooklyn", "Queens", "the Bronx" or "Staten Island").

It means your leaving the "burbs" or the "country" to go to the concrete jungle....where you are eagerly anxious to leave as you are quickly reminded of why you do not live here in the 1st place! Sa_v_y? : )

Literally it means you are going to the major urban downtown area in a region. Figuratively, it means that you are getting classy.

It depends on where in the country you are when you hear it.

If you live in Northern California, for example, it's likely that "The City" is San Francisco.

If you are in New York, it's likely that "The City" is Manhattan (NYC).

In general, if you are in a suburban area, it refers to the nearest large city.
