A true Prime Rib is from a prime grade of beef. They are the same cut. Prime Rib can have the bone. That is why it is called rib. A standing rib roast always has the bone, hence Standing because they stand up. When I was in high school I was in FFA and part of a meat judging team. I can tell you very little beef makes the grade as Prime. How restraunts get away with selling prime rib that is really not prime irritates me.

prime rib never has bones but a standing rib roast does. And it is stood on it's end while cooking. When sliced to serve,it looks like a long boned lamb chop, while a cut of prime rib looks more like a steak kinda and is usually served in it's own juice.....Au Jus .
