Just spread it on smoothly. To cover any flaws, you can press chopped nuts or sprinkles into the sides. Looks pro, but easy.

Get out your Cuisinart or stand mixer (i % to propose the Cuisinart). mixture jointly right here . . . a million stick of crisco (butter flavored) a million stick of room temp butter a million lb of powdered sugar (upload somewhat at a time!) approx 2 tbsp of water (upload somewhat at a time with the sugar) a million tsp of salt (popcorn salt in case you have it) mixture till it is all mixed jointly soften a million-2 ozof chocolate (the darker the extra sensible) a million/3 cup of coco powder (unsweetened) enable the mixer run for sort of five-7 minutes jointly as you freshen up. would desire to be adequate to ice an entire 8inch double layer cake Err on the edge of too thick while making the icing. If it is too thick you may upload water via hand somewhat at a time. If it is too skinny you may upload extra sugar and crisco and that's somewhat harder

Let the cake cool, uncovered, for four hours (or overnight).
Slice off thin layer, if top of cake is domed.
Use a pastry brush to clean off loose crumbs.
Place a spoon of icing on a serving plate to keep cake from sliding.
Place the first layer on the plate, top side down.
Spread 1/2 cup of frosting to the edges on the first layer.
Place the second cake layer on top of the first layer, top side up.
Frost the top and then the sides of the cake.
For a smooth finish, let the cake set for an hour.
Gently rub the surface smooth with parchment paper and your hands.
Tips:
Store cakes in an airtight container at about 40 degrees.
Freeze a frosted cake on a cookie sheet. Once frozen, place it in a plastic bag.
Thaw cake, unwrapped, at room temperature.
