Depends on the flavor I want to emphasize. I'll use butter with sharp cheddar and toast my bagel - especially if I have a good "Everything" or "European Seed" bagel. If I'm stuck with generic freezer bagels, though, I'll use onion and chive cream cheese whipped topping in place of the butter, plus whatever cheeses I can find, to give the poor thing some flavor. If I don't have cheese to add at all, then I definitely prefer cream cheese to butter. Either way, bagels are awesome!

Why on Earth would anyone put butter on their bagels when God made cream cheese for that purpose?!?

Cream cheese, absolutely! Nothing better on a bagel than cream cheese, whether alone, or with other toppings. Although... I sometimes like to use peanut butter too.

I have been to Lender's Bagels factory in Buffalo,NY. I gotta tell you I def like cream cheese on bagels but butter would work great on fresh bagels. Unfortunately down here in the swamps we can't get a fresh bagel dang it.

I never get butter on my bagels. I like some whipped cream cheese, a slice or two of lox, and the best of the best: thin slices of hot onion! Wowee!
What a mouth feel!
