Apart from Buddhism, no other religions have given specific details of ghosts, demons and gods. Peta and Asura are known to be ghosts and demons. There are 12 different kinds of peta and 4 different kinds of Asura. Even though hungry ghosts are well known, not all ghosts are hungry. I guess you have heard about the ghosts of castles and palaces in England. Some ghosts have power, authority and subjects or servants. A well known ghost in Buddhism is King Yama of the hells (also known as the Death) that he has all authority to decide and manage all the affairs of hells and hell beings.
Actually, there are many beliefs, apart from main (or largest) religions based on spirits, or spirits worshiping. All different peoples (not all individuals) of different nations (Asia, Africa, Europe, Americas) somehow believe in unseen creatures: such as fairies and spirits and also ghosts and demons - the good ones or the bad ones. Witchcrafts can be found in all different beliefs as well, mainly related to bad spirits.
Yes, many people around the world believe in God but they also believe in traditional systems that dual-belief systems have been developing due to the spreads of main religions in the developing countries.
Hopefully you find something useful from my answer.

The notion of "hungry ghost" appears in several religious traditions. In general, these are "beings" with insatiable appetites -- their hunger can never be satisfied.

They appear in Buddhism as residents of one of the Six Realms. They have bloated stomachs and necks as thin as a human hair -- so they can never get enough food. This represents the difficulty of satisfying human desire.

In Taoism, hungry ghosts are the ghosts of people who did not find everything that they needed to survive in the after-life.

In Chinese ancestor worship, hungry ghosts return to their former household at certain times of the year to feast. Chinese people put out food and drink for them.

In Japan, hungry ghosts are the spirits of jealous and greedy people who feed on feces in the after-life.

In Hinduism, hungry ghosts are spirits driven by the objects of their desire.

The Book of Enoch in the Dead Sea Scrolls describes "fallen angels" who wander the world in the form of evil spirits. They have no mouths and so they are endlessly thirsty.

In Ancient Rome hungry ghosts were ancestor spirits who must be appeased with an offering of beans. The tradition of the vampire may be connected to these spirits.

As a real Bible believing Christian,I can say I have seen one ghost,no if ans or buts about it and experienced two others. Now most Christian teachers nowadays would attribute these to the Demonic.I probably would have also had I not been there. This happened three times, different spirits over a 30 year stretch.I wasn't looking for them ,it just happened.

I'm not sure a belief in ghosts is specifically tied to religion. But a belief in the afterlife would certainly leave room for this phenomenon. Happy New Year!!!!!!!
