I am planning on putting in new flooring on the main floor. I was thinking of wood and then saw bamboo. I know bamboo is better for the environment. I have pets and need durable hopefully if possible scratch free. I would love input from people with experience with both or either.

Wood. Bamboo is currently popular but may not be in a few years. The better bamboo is just as durable as wood because it is compressed to harden it. The cheaper stuff is not. Because of the finish used both have the same care requirements. The claim that bamboo is more environmentally friendly could be debated. Yes it grows quickly, but most is not farmed it is being harvested from wild stocks to clear the land.
I spent more than 20 yr. owning a janitorial srvice cleaning wood floors. My favorite, especially for a lighter colored floor is Maple.

There is a wood called ironwood, I think. Very dense and dark. These make the best utensils, much less absorbent than regular wooden spoons or bamboo utensils, so food does not stick to them so easily.

If you are looking for durability then wood is the way to go. Bamboo may look nice and be more environmentally friendly but it is extremely soft and scratches very easily. Bamboo is also very high maintenance and required constant cleaning to keep it looking good.

Bamboo is more expensive then wood. I love the look of bamboo, but I wouldn't know how to install it. I installed a large living room with red-oak/wood. Bamboo is also 33% more durable than wood, and only takes 4 1/2 years to grow.
