... when an elderly person and a younger person meet, who is required to greet the other first?

Believer in God- in some places a youth does not speak to an older person unless spoken to first.

No one forced you to answer the question ifyou don't know anything.

Seems like there is no "rules of etiquette" about this, but I think elderly ones just LIKE it when younger ones greet them respectfully.

I live in England and it makes no difference.
Here a greeting is acceptable from either, infact elderly people love interaction with the young.

I am a Jehovah's Witness and when we go around our door ministry our young have a higher response from the very old than we do.

Here in Hungary there appears to be no set pattern.
In the congregation it is difficult for me as I don't speak Hungarian, but they have taught me how to greet people, but there is a difference how you greet the brothers to how you greet the person outside. For example, on the doors and to those not witnesses, unless family and very close friends, we say Jo napot kivanok,(good day) and to the brothers and family we say Szervusz (hello and goodbye).

I'm a friendly person, and I greet a lot of people I meet.

Define Greet?

I smile at most of the elders I see. Is that a greeting?

Then again, I do verbally greet them sometimes as well...though most of the time, I do say/simle first.
