Interesting question. Here are some possibilities:
1. Marriage for time prepares us for marriage for eternity. It's like practice.
2. Allowing marriage for time is an act of mercy on God's part. If marriage for eternity were the only licit form of marriage, many people (including many who have not yet had the opportunity to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ) would not be living that law.
3. The family is the basic unit of society. Marriage allows family units to be formed and thus holds society together, in a sense. These benefits are desirable regardless of the religion of the people involved.

The purpose of marriage on earth is to prepare us for life in the eternities. When we marry here on earth we create a family unit in which two people learn to love and care for each other's needs, whether it be emotional, physical, sexual, intellectual, or spiritual needs. We learn to become selfless in marriage, if we do it with the right attitude. It is a commitment to look after the total well-being of another person. It's more than just a piece of paper--- it's not all about sex and money-- it's more than having children and proving rights--- it's something much deeper and lasting than all of these reasons. Marriage is a complete, all-encompassing, nurturing relationship. It's a sacred union. It's a union that's built to last, not just for the here and now, but the eternities as well. It does not have to end with death.

Ephesians 5, compares marriage on earth to the relationship between Christ and the church. They are similar in function and purpose. It's a covenant; Never ending!
I'm very sensitive to this subject since last year, this very day, my wife (covenant partner, of 18 years) went home to be with the Lord.

Stability for any children that come along.
And stability for the economic situation.
There is no marriage in heaven because there is no flesh in heaven.
(1 CORINTHIANS 15:50) However, this I say, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit God’s kingdom, neither does corruption inherit incorruption.

Marriage is an expression of covenant..the same covenant that God made with his people Israel. This is very spiritual and deep. It represents a permanent exchange of strengths, for weaknesses, and an eternal promise to cherish and protect one another.
The love of a husband for his wife, is similar to the love of Christ for the Church. The two individual people become one flesh.
I know the world doesn't understand this mystery, but when Christians are married it is much more then a "piece of paper".
I recommend looking into Covenant and what it really means, it's an eye-opener!

In a perfect sense, marriage should be an institution that allows a man and the woman to fulfill some material desires for enjoyment for having family, children, sex etc. But to make the best out of these material propensities, these activities should be done in religious way by putting God in the center of life. In this way one can become gradually free from materialistic propensities and thus develop love of God, the ultimate spiritual perfection of life.
