Another thing to be sure of. When you bring the camera
back into a warm house (or car) be sure to have it wrapped up good in a plastic bag and leave it in the bag until it
warms up naturally. Otherwise it will sweat inside and
out and could be severely damaged.

The greatest hazard I've had when using my camera outdoors in the cold is battery life. Often, the battery won't report its power correctly to the camera if it gets too cold.

But the best advice of all is the advice Wingman gave you. Going from cold to hot (or hot to cold) environments can damage your camera from condensation.

I use an air-tight and water-tight case made by Pelican when I'm outside in cold weather for a while. By sealing in the cold air with the camera, it can take its time to warm up to room temperature and avoid condensation.

I've never had a problem with memory cards or camera functions when outside in the cold, but take that with a grain of salt, as I live in a warmer climate where the coldest temps only just barely get below freezing.

You also need to consider the type of SD memory card you have (or whatever kind of flash memory you use). Not all types can work at all temperatures. From personal experience, I know that the Sandisk Extreme III is an expensive, but very durable brand.

Length of time will vary depending on various factors, including wind and exposure factor. Best thing is keep it under your jacket next to your body unless actually shooting. Also make sure you have plenty of batts and keep thenm warm, they lose power in cold.
