1/4 cup of icing sugar mixture with 30 grams of butter makes a good icing without the thickness and heaviness of cream cheese. Add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla essence, rum essence or lemon essence for flavouring or add 1 tablespoon of coca powder for chocolate icing.

No. My husbands favorite cake is his grandmother's Red Velvet Cake and her frosting is a cooked frosting with butter and flour, no cream cheese. I have found similar recipes on the About.com site. Search Red Velvet Cake Recipes.

The absolute BEST cheesecake icing I ever had was about 30 years ago-I asked the lady how it was made and she ssaid it was a flour-butter-sugar icing.I FINALLY found it on a website. It is not too sweet, and lighter in cosistency than cream cheese icing.
The website is recipezaar.com

That is the recipe to use for red velvet cake. If you hate cream cheese, make another type of cake that you like with icing that you like. Never met anybody that didn't like chocolate cake with chocolate icing.

No. A lot of people make it with a butter cream frosting or any other frosting that they enjoy. I happen to like cream cheese and its frosting, but I use butter cream on red velvet cake. My friend made one at Thanksgiving time and used a Crisco based frosting.

Use whatever you enjoy! Especially since you're doing the work!

Most often the icing used for red velvet cake is cream cheese icing, but If you dislike it, use something like a marshmallow cream icing or something that is not too heavy or sugary. What you use is up to you, the cream cheese is only a recommendation.

well that's the original recipe but I'm sure if you used something else like vanilla it would taste fine.
