I am a non-smoker. My mother smokes and she came to visit recently. I watched her have a cigarette and then come into the house and she put her hands straight into the salad and started tossing it without washing her hands. I think this is really gross but when I approached her about it she got defensive and told me not to be silly. Am I overreacting?

No, she should have washed even if she hadn't been smoking. People always under estimate the importance of hand washing and yet that simple act of cleanliness can make the difference between life and death in hospitals all over the country and the difference between sick and well at restaurants all over the country. Not washing your hands and then touching your face can cause eye problems, and passes illness around, like the flu.
ESPECIALLY when you're going to put your HANDS in everyone's FOOD.
A waitress in Miami at a deli sent over 70 customers to the hospital when she didn't wash her hands and there was fecal matter on her fingernails.

I am having the same situation rightg now. My father is visiting and he smokes and when comes in frm outside from skoing he NEVER washes his hands and then when I ask him he also gets defensive and just puts water on them and calls that washing them. If grosses me out and now my sinus headaches tghat have been gone for two months returned and I believe it is from the second hand smoke. I am really going to sit him down and talk to him because I cannot handle it and he is staying with me for 2-3 months.

I think it's gross. Everyone should wash their hands before handling food, whether they smoke or not. Happy New Year. 2D

yeah, smoking is gross by itself though too. i work at a restaurant and people can get in BIG trouble if they don't wash hands after smoking.

Tossing salad with your hands in someone elses home verges on being animalistic; I've never even heard of such a thing. Smoking has NOTHING to do with it, but one washes their hands before working with, or touching food, period. Anything else is uncivilized. Your mother probably won't change, but I'd sure NOT let her in my kitchen.

She should wash her hands before touching food whether she smokes or not, even nonsmokers like to scratch their butt.
