I have a 9month old female Great Dane, and we didn't train her to be protective, but she is... She's an inside dog, the biggest cuddle bug you'd ever meet, but when someone she's not used to even walks by our house, she goes window to window barking to let us know someone's out there. Also she will get in between me and the window and start pushing me back, she also does this with my two small dogs(Chi. and Pom/maltese mix) she will actually take her nose and move them both back.

Great Danes are pussy cats, but they can be very protective with their owners. My husband and I had a Great Dane when we got married, a friend of ours was talking to my husband through the car window and he reached in the window to grab my husbands wallet (just fooling around) and our Great Dane, who was in the back seat, nailed him in the ear and he lost part of his ear! You usually do not have to train a dog to be protective, they will just be that way with their family. Another thing, people are intimidated just by the large size of a Dane, so that right there would be a deterrent.

-Edit- I guess I can't use the word pu$$y as in pu$$y cats! Let me say that Great Danes are sweethearts and very gentle dogs. Silly Yahoo Answers! lol

Pretty much any dog can be trained for protection, however it is NOT advisable to train a giant breed such as a Great Dane as a protection dog.

Dog's will be protective towards their owners in general as they would be of their packs members in the wild. I would be worried about a dog being "trained" to be protective unless you really know what your doing. You do not a overly aggressive dog that will hurt people.
