Epidural shot did not help me either and the sciatica is the worse pain- I understand believe me. I have four herniated discs so surgery is not an option for me as I each level would not be able to support the other level. Have you taken steroids? That helped me for a little while but had many side effects I did not like. Physical therapy helped me get into an exercise regimen when the last thing I wanted was to exercise. I lost a little bit of weight and that also helped. Recovery is different for everyone but personally with my four disc herniation and my spinal condition of spinal stenosis, I had the sciatica for about six months and then pain for another six months and today (three years later) I never feel the sciatica and I hardly ever feel pain. My main culprit in preventing my recovery I believe was smoking-which robs you of essential nutrients needed to keep those discs strong. There is a great medication out that works very well for nerve pain and you should ask your orthopedic doctor to see if you are a candidate for wellbutrin, which largely used as an antidepressant can work wonders for your nerve pain. How long ago was your herniation diagnosed? Waiting is rough but if you smoke-quit, if you can afford to lose some weight-do so, and go to physical therapy, especially work on strengthening your abdominal muscles because that can really help support your lower back and prevent any further injury. Good luck.

Surgery is an alternative only but, you'll need an orthopedic surgeon to examine you and, see how bad, what, how long. Don't presume you can get by without proper help. Don't rush into a chiropractors office or, an acupuncture's, it's going to cost you and, if they don't take proper procedures like X-Rays, at least, they could do more harm.
See an orthopedic surgeon and, get the proper diagnosis. I have been handi-capped with severe degenerative disc disease for many years along with severe neurological nerve damages, I know what your going through.

Much depends on where the split in the disc is, if it is impinging on the nerve roots, bulging into the spinal canal. My disc is prolapsed, so impinging on the nerve root and they have me on Fentanyl Patches. At 49 they are not offering surgery, unless I loose my bowel and bladder function. Instead they are hoping 10-15 years for the Disc to dehydrate naturally, thereby not impinging on anything. Good Luck

look up some of the current disc therapy studies on sites like webmd.com. I know there is a new non surgical procedure that UCSD offers so I'm sure it is available in your area. Consult with your Orthopedic doc
I've been in 2 for a cervical spine injury and I've received a lot of help

You can try acupuncture. It often helps this kind of pain. Find a real licensed acupuncturist (not an MD or DC, who don't have to have the same level of training) with experience treating neurologic pain.

you probably should never have had the surgery. physical therapy can do nothing to help, either. the cause of your back pain is in your upper neck, and unless and until you get it corrected, your back will just get worse. see an hio method chiropractor.
