God commanded us to kill:
unruly children: Deut: 21:20
Idolaters: Deut 13:6
The Accused: Deut 17:6
Children of enemies (to include babies): Nu.31:17, Deut 21:13, Psalm 137:9
A bride who is accused of not being a virgin: Deut: 22:13
The careless Ex 21:29

Who we should hate:
Those who eat crab or shrimp: Lev 11:10
Those who remarry same person: Deut 24:4
Homosexuals: Lev 18:22
the proud: Pr 16:5
A woman who wears pants: Deut 22:5
A man with long hair: ICor 11:14 (oops new testament)

and all the things God apparently either did himself or approved of or commanded to do?
The earth swallowing up thousands, God drowns almost everyone on Earth, He kills Egyptian babies to punish Pharaoh, people having to eat their own children's flesh, God punished children for their parent's sin, threatens to have wild animals to carry away Israelite's children...

And worst of all, God ruins Job's life all because of a wager with the Devil!

How was this transformed into a God of mercy?

Actually if you keep going, in Leviticus 20:13 the Bible states
"If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; there blood shall be upon them"

So homosexuals were condemned to die.

But as to your question of God being a God of mercy. He was very merciful to Israel, and with the coming of Christ he extended that mercy to the Gentiles(which is to say all of us non Jews).

Unfortunately not wanting to call sin, "sin", is why people seek to justify there actions. John 3:19-20 states " And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved."

So man who wants to live in sin(darkness) is going to come up with everything possible to justify his lifestyle.

I believe he was and is a God of mercy. There is a difference between punishment and mercy. God is merciful but he is also just. He is merciful to all, but he did punish those who broke his specific laws. After the old testament when christ was crucified his methods of dealing with christians changed. The old law was no longer in effect. For example no more animal sacrifices were necessary because jesus was the attonement for our sin. Many things changed. I hope you get what I am trying to say.

God is was and will be all knowing. I thank God for His mercy to let Jesus Christ Son of God die for my sins.

I will not question Him just thank and praise Him. Instead of looking for things to accuse why don't you look for things understand.

Read, Psalm, Isaiah, Jeremiah. Jeremiah 29:10 I know the plans I have for you plans for good and a future.

You forgot to list the people God favored. I think you might have missed that because it blows your argument.

God wants SOME PEOPLE. He does not want EVERYBODY. He does not love EVERYBODY. He said so. So all the people who God does not want need to have a good life and then it's over.

Does that make you hate Him and me even more? Good. It's meant to make divisions between people. Jesus said that it would, and that people would hate us, but they hated him before they hated us.

Of course, people who complain about something they don't believe in tend to cry about things all of the time, even those things they don't believe in, like you are doing.

God only wants some people. Get it through your head.

Christians completely ignore the OT (except for the few parts they like).
