We left sandy in the house and she would hide like for all other things. Just show her love and attention when you get home. Sandy is now 15 and to old to worry and or care about storms, lightining and fireworks like when she was young.

I don't know if this will help you or not. But to break a dog of gun shyness, loud bang, you can use a small caliber blanks gun. When feeding the dog, place his bowl on the floor. When he starts to eat fire the blank. If he jumps pick up the food. Wait a while and try again. It will take time and patience. You must be gentle but firm. Soon he will think of the noise as a dinner bell. For hunting dogs they start with a small caliber at a young age. They are also outside in an enclosed area, as you know dogs run. If you don't want the blanks gun I suppose a lot of blown up sandwich bags could also work.

We adopted a wheaten 3 months ago. She is petrified of many things, one of which is fire works. I called my vet and she advised 1mg if Benadryl for every pound. Dissolve it in water and use a syringe to administer. Right now Reilly has tucked herself in one of our closets. If this doesn't work there are drugs your vet can prescribe. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER TO THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY. . .THAT IS A BAD IDEA. GOOD LUCK!

I took my dog outside on the 4th of July to show her the firework noise and if I hadn't had her on a leash she would have tried to attack the fireworks! Make sure your dog is in a safe place in the house where she cannot get outside while there are fireworks. She could run away or attack the fireworks!

Do not comfort your dog while she is scared, this only encourages and reinforces her fear! Remain calm and show your dog this calmness. Do not talk to your dog, look her in the face, or touch her. Let her deal with her fear.

This is natural for dogs and there is not much you can do to alleviate her fear, it's an instinctual thing. I have had two dogs run away from home- one on July 4 and the other on New year's eve because of this. Keep her inside, safe, and don't let her out!!! In fear she may bolt, and that's an awful way to start the new year, searching for a lost and terrified dog.
