i have worked with a couple of eye surgeons, so from experience they typically say keep it on till the next day when you go back and see the doctor then put it on at night for the first week. This will keep your hands from wandering and possibly scratching or rubbing the operative eye in your sleep. It does get annoying to take the patch off for the drops that need to put in it, but better to be safe than sorry.

The patch I used was a metal patch with holes in it and a rubber liner around it that pressed against my face. My doctor only instructed me to wear it at night while I was sleeping for the first few days. I didnt have to wear it unless I was sleeping.

With the newer types of incisions used in cataract surgeries, some people don't patch at all. Some leave a patch on for a few hours, others until bedtime, and others will keep the eye patched till the next day or till the visit to the surgeon's office. It also depends on the type of anesthesia...topical vs. different types of injections. If a retrobulbar injection is used, the eye, the lids and muscles will be paralyzed and that patch will stay on till the office visit the next day.
