DeBeer who runs the diamond cartel kept out the 2 month thing.
This is same guys who basically tells us to pay for diamonds way more then it is.
Read up on it and you will find that diamonds are not as rare as we think and even failed to make it on top 10 rarest gems and still outprices those by a mile.
There is no rule at all. Also remember that someone might buy from tiffanys a ring for $5000 and get it appraised for $5000.
some savy person might get a ring online or via pawn or a small jeweler for $1000 and get appraised for $2000.
Personally i think its what you like is all.
I recall at work a girl who wore a 0.20 carat diamond ring which actually looked amazing and we commented on it.Local " i love money " cow (guess each office has one sigh) came and said how small it was not even a carat.
Girl smiled and said i got a man and love my ring.Watch it dear few more years and you will be begging the local drunk to give you a bubble gum ring.
Damn my kind of woman!

None of the above (in your question).

You spend how much you can AFFORD. Ignore the jewelers recommendations on salary for an engagement ring.

If you need to take out a loan, its too expensive.

Neither, those are NOT guidelines.
Use your own figuring out of how much you can save, how much you can afford comfortably. Don't go into debt over a ring. There are lovely rings you can get for several hundreds of dollars and up.

The right amount to spend on an engagement ring is the amount you can afford.
It's the sentiment behind the giving of the ring that should be the most important thing, not how big the stone is.

There is no "right" amount. The whole 1 month or 2 months salary idea has been put out there by, you guessed it, the jewelry industry!! Gee, I can't imagine why on earth they would know how much money is the "right" amount to spend on an engagement ring?

There is a "right" way to pay for an engagement ring though...with cash that you have saved up. Don't go into debt for it. Starting your marriage out in debt for rings, a wedding, etc., is not a good idea. Remember that the cause for most divorces is money problems.

I would get her what you can afford now, and buy her something more pricey later (if you want to) If she pouts b/c of the size of the ring that should really volume about her values

When my boyfriend and I started talking about getting engaged, he asked me to pick out my ring because he knows I have a really unique taste in jewelry. What I did was ask him his price range. After all, if you two are going to be married, then you need to be able to be honest and talk about finances. So I went and picked out a few rings within his price range and let him surprise me by picking out the one he liked the best...

Truthfully there is no "right" amount to spend. You spend what you are comfortable spending and what you can afford. I sure wouldn't have wanted my DH to go into serious debt for my ring especially when you are going to get married. I'm also not saying go and buy the cheapest ring you can find either. First set a budget, and then go from there. Check out bluenile.com and mondera.com. We picked out my diamond from Mondera. Both highly reputable sites. That's the only way I would ever purchase a diamond again. Good luck!
